Save up to 25% in shipping cost moving fruit juices in flexitanks

The challenge

The biggest suppliers of fruit juice concentrate, traditionally transport their products in their own vessels, using drums in refrigerated containers or flexitanks in insulated containers.

Owned ships are specifically designed to carry product in large quantities at minus temperatures, to ensure taste and quality is preserved throughout the transit process. To ship smaller quantities than a bulk vessel, a traditional solution is to transport fruit concentrate in drums, packed in refrigerated containers.  This solution is costly, with a single shipment price of around $6.5k just in packaging*.

Owing to Hillebrand’s reputation as a leader in intermediate bulk solutions, fruit juice producers challenged us to design and manufacture a flexitank solution that would reduce their transportation costs, whilst preserving the sensitive molecular structure of their Juice.

This flexitank works in harmony with 40ft refrigerated containers to offer an impressive volume to weight shipping option with the cost saving benefits of intermediate bulk solutions.

The solution

Hillebrand’s technical team meticulously studied the concept of transporting juice in flexitanks using refrigerated containers, over a 16 month period. Successful trials led to the completion in the design and manufacture of this new flexitank, which would allow juice to be constantly chilled during transport, thus preserving the products quality and freshness to destination.

The design also ensures the safeguarding of the product against any potential contamination and conceals a reinforced infrastructure to eliminate any wave motion inside the flexitank whilst it is in transit.

This flexitank works in harmony with 40ft refrigerated containers to offer an impressive volume to weight shipping option with the cost saving benefits of intermediate bulk solutions.

The results

The fruit juice supplier confirms a single shipment of fruit juice in a refrigerated flexitank can reduce their costs by 20% compared to shipping a refrigerated container of juice in drums. Moreover, this solution allows for 10% more product to be shipped in a single container movement.

Following the success of this project, and the introduction of this new flexitank that can transport product under refrigerated conditions in a 40ft container, other foodstuffs such as finished beer and dairy are now in test conditions to see how the flexitank cradles these goods across the globe.
